Analysis of sesame seed production and export trends; challenges and strategies towards increasing production in Uganda

Sesame ( Sesamum indicum L.) is one of the most ancient oilseed crops cultivated for its edible oil and uses in food. seeds are very nutritious confer health benefits. However, potential production Uganda has not been fully realized. The objective this review was to summarize trends sesame production, export quantity, value, challenges, strategies sustainable seed Uganda. revealed area harvested generally increased from 1996 2007 but significantly decreased between 2008 2018. also that while quantities values were low, they gradually 2009 2016. 2016 could have due challenges such as pests diseases, loss soil fertility, prolonged drought, poor agronomic practices, yielding varieties, lack access credit. Therefore, it recommended improve breeding programs management practices; strengthen agricultural credits extension services support marketing seeds; practices farmer knowledge on improved techniques sowing methods, plant spacing, intercropping disease control measures. These boost given high domestic global demand provide an opportunity expand throughout Research should focus how increase yield farmers’ fields bridge gap researchers farmers adopting good practices.
